Inflammatory processes in the prostate are typical for men of mature age after 40. The pathology is caused by various hormonal disorders, viruses or bacteria, weak immune defenses, genitourinary and sexually transmitted diseases, prolonged absence of sexual intercourse. Treatment usually does not create problems, because the pharmaceutical market offers many modern drugs that effectively deal with prostatitis. Only a qualified urologist should decide which prostatitis medication a particular patient should take.
Forms of drugs used for prostatitis
Medications prescribed to treat prostatitis are available in the form of tablets, suppositories, instillations, injections, or microenemas. Tablet preparations are usually presented with antibiotics with a fairly broad spectrum of action, which are prescribed in cases where the cause of the pathology has not yet been identified. In general, antibiotics are three groups of drugs:
- Fluoroquinolones.
- Penicillins.
- Tetracyclines.
Suppositories that are used rectally (inserted into the anus) are often used to treat prostatitis. Such drugs effectively relieve pain and have antibacterial action. The greatest penetration into body tissues is characterized by injection solutions. They have a systemic effect, stimulate the immune and vascular system.
According to experts, the maximum therapeutic efficacy is achieved by rectal administration, therefore it is more desirable than other methods of treating prostatitis.
It is not uncommon for the treatment of prostatitis to involve instillation procedures, when the drug is injected directly into the patient's urethral canal. Before applying the solution, the person must empty the bladder. No more than 5 ml of solution is injected in one procedure. The main therapy can be supplemented with folk remedies, such as microenemas, in which the cure for prostatitis is presented in the form of herbal decoctions or infusions. The microclyster technique is based on a complex temperature-healing effect. Such treatment must be carried out before bedtime, because after microclysters hypothermia or overexertion of the prostate is unacceptable.
Pharmacological groups of drugs for prostatitis
The treatment of prostatitis is always complex, including the use of drugs of different pharmacological groups: antibiotics, painkillers, α-blockers, muscle relaxants and drugs containing hormones, antiviral and anti-inflammatory, as well as phytotherapeutic agents, etc. With prostatitis of bacterial etiology, antibiotics are the basis of therapy. Treatment with tablet antibiotics is usually prescribed for chronic and acute bacterial prostatitis and lasts for about a month. In case of complications of prostatitis, treatment is carried out by injecting the drug. If the cause of the infection cannot be identified, combination antibiotic therapy is given.
Anesthetic drugs significantly facilitate the course of prostatitis, but they should be taken according to the instructions, because uncontrolled intake of analgesics can cause the appearance of very unwanted side effects. The use of α-blockers is due to the relaxing effect of these drugs on the muscles and neck of the bladder, which significantly reduces the pain associated with urination. But these drugs cause side effects like hypotension or headaches. Similar drugs are prescribed for chronic prostatitis of nonbacterial etiology.
Often the body of a man with prostatitis needs to rebuild and strengthen the immune defense, which is helped by drugs from the group of immunomodulators, which include interferons and other drugs.
It is used in the treatment of prostatitis and muscle relaxants, which reduce the tone of the muscles located in the perineum. The use of such drugs is due to the fact that the tension of these muscles causes a feeling of discomfort and pain. The use of hormone-containing drugs in treatment is due to the need to lower testosterone levels, which causes prostate proliferation. As a result of hormone therapy, the intensity of the inflammatory process decreases and the hormonal background normalizes. Sometimes, as an additional treatment for prostatitis, herbal preparations are used to remove swelling, inflammation and pain. Herbal remedies are often used in the treatment of chronic forms of prostate inflammation.
In the case of prostatitis of viral etiology, the use of antiviral drugs is indicated. Therapy is often supplemented by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The action of such drugs is aimed at eliminating pain and swelling, high fever, accompanying inflammatory processes in the prostate. Suppositories containing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are particularly effective. Drug therapy often involves the use of drugs that improve blood flow to the prostate.
There are many effective remedies for treating prostate inflammation, but they cannot be prescribed on their own, even if there are no contraindications at all.
